About Termites

In Central Oregon, ALL termite species are of the subterranean variety. This means that when they do colonize, it takes place in an inconspicuous are the average homeowner rarely inspects: your foundation.

From there, the termites make their way upward into the walls, entering through cracks in the foundation, or from within structural wood and trim in contact with the ground.

Termite prevention is key to mitigation, because once termites invade the walls of a home, they act fast. In fact, it is estimated that it would only take 118 days for a mature colony to consume a one foot long piece of 2x4!

How do I know if I have termites?

A termite infestation can go undetected for years due to their elusive subterrainian species in the high desert, but evidence of their activity is often discovered during renovations or spring cleaning. As a homeowner there are a few signs of termite damage your can look for that signal the need for termite extermination.

In the spring, be on the lookout for swarmers! Swarmers are winged adult termites that look like small flying ants. A termite swarm is not necessarily an indication a house has been infested, but it does mean that termites are in the area and looking to start a new colony.

Also, looking for mud tubes when inspecting your foundation and crawlspace is a tell tale sign of a potential pest control issue. Mud tubes aid in travel to and from the nest, and will oftentimes be found on the foundation walls. They are usually made from soil or wood particles and are about the size of a drinking straw. If the tunnel is empty, it doesn’t mean the termites have left; further inspection by a professional, local pest control company is crucial!
